What identification methods does XiTrust offer with A-Trust, and how do they work?

A‑Trust offers several ways to verify your identity for qualified electronic signatures (QES). Depending on your situation, you can choose between on-site registration (via a registration officer), a video identification procedure (e.g., WebID), or an auto/self-identification procedure (NECT). The latter also plays an important role in issuing an xIDENTITY via the XignUp portal. After successful identification, complete the setup in your A-Trust account. The following article provides detailed information about the different procedures.

1. Overview of the individual procedures

Please note: The following identification procedures refer to A-Trust. The choice of procedure has no influence on the functions in MOXIS — it only determines how your digital identity is confirmed.

XiTip
If you already have an ID Austria (or a mobile phone signature), you can sign MOXIS directly with a qualified signature. In this case, you will not usually need to identify yourself again.

1.1. Option 1: The Registration Officer (RO) – Personal identification on site

Registration Officers are the point of contact when digital identities are to be issued in person and on site. Until a few years ago, this was the only way to register for a digital identity. However, there are now online alternatives, which will be discussed in this article.

For whom is identification via a Registration Officer suitable for?

There are companies that want to identify employees in person on site (e.g., during onboarding waves or if a stable video/mobile environment cannot be guaranteed).

How does registration with a registration officer work?

  1. Once you have made an appointment with the person, you can attend the appointment with the registration officer of your choice. Please note that a valid ID document is required for registration.

  2. The Registration Officer will check your ID and the associated data during the appointment and confirm your identity.

  3. You will receive the information for initial registration and complete the setup in your A-Trust account via the A-Trust app.

Please note: It is possible to have your own employees trained as registration officers. A registration officer may perform identification checks for any number of people. However, training to become a registration officer is subject to a fee and requires annual recertification, which also incurs a cost.

XiTip
When scheduling on-site appointments, allow time for ID verification and data entry to avoid waiting times. The more information you have ready in advance, the faster the registration process will be. Please also download the A-Trust app in advance.

1.2. Option 2: The video identification (WebID) procedure. Live call for digital identity

Unlike the registration officer, a video identification procedure is a digital process in which you prove your identity online via video call with a trained agent.

For whom is this process suitable?

WebID is particularly suitable for people who want to be identified at short notice, are not under any time pressure, and have the technical capabilities to make a video call.

How does registration via the video identification process work?

  1. Once the time for your appointment has arrived, start the video call in your browser or on your smartphone.

  2. A trained WebID agent will then check the ID features and ask any questions.

  3. After successful verification, you will be redirected to the A-Trust registration.

  4. You will then complete the initial registration in your A-Trust account.

XiTip
To make sure the appointment goes as smoothly as possible, make sure you have a stable internet connection and good lighting. Also, have a valid ID (like a passport) ready for registration and download the A-Trust app ahead of time.

1.3. Option 3: The Self-Ident (NECT) procedure. How to obtain a digital identity without waiting

With the Self-Ident procedure, you are guided through the registration process for a digital identity via an app. XiTrust uses this procedure, for example, to issue xIDENITY via the XignUp portal, which we offer in cooperation with A-Trust.

For whom is this procedure suitable?

For anyone who wants to and is able to complete the process independently via an app without the involvement of another person (e.g., outside of normal service hours). The big advantage of the Self-Ident procedure is that you can register anytime, anywhere, provided you have a stable internet connection.

How does registration via the Self-Ident process work?

  1. If you already use XignUp in your company, contact your internal XignUp administrator and request a registration link.

  2. Once you have this link, you have seven days to complete the process. If the link expires, simply request a new one.

  3. In the guided Self-Ident process, you will be asked to scan your ID, take a selfie/liveness check, and complete other plausibility checks.

  4. Once identification via NECT has been successful, you will be redirected to the A-Trust app to complete the registration.

XiTip
To make the registration process as efficient as possible, please ensure you have a stable internet connection and sufficient lighting. Also, have a valid ID document (such as a passport) ready for registration and download the NECT app and the A-Trust app in advance.

Please also note that for technical reasons, registration must be carried out on two different devices (e.g., a smartphone and a computer).

2. Frequently asked questions about the registration process

2.1. How do I change my signature password?

You can change your signature password in your A‑Trust account if you know your current password. Find out more here.

2.2. What should I do if I have forgotten my signature password? Can I have it reset?

For security reasons, a classic reset (without knowledge of the old password) is generally not provided for A‑Trust signatures. In this case, depending on the signature medium, re-registration or reissuance may be necessary. Further information can be found here.

XiTip
There are separate recovery processes for ID-Austria accounts. These include an RSa letter or a second factor. More information can be found here.

2.3. How long is my digital identity valid?

You can see the validity and renewal options for your A‑Trust signature tool directly in your A‑Trust account. Start the renewal process in good time (6 months) before expiry and follow the steps described there.

3. Which procedure is the right one?

There is no “better” or “worse” procedure, only the procedure that best suits you and your requirements. It is also possible to combine the procedures.

For larger entities, it makes sense to offer two procedures in parallel, for example, a registration officer in branches with poor internet connections and NECT for all other branches. This prevents failures and bottlenecks.

3.1. What are the advantages of each procedure?

  • NECT (XignUp) The self-identification process is quick and can be carried out independently. It is available around the clock and can be carried out without a live call.

  • Video identification (WebID) The video identification process is carried out with personal assistance. It is available during regular working hours, as it includes a live call with an agent.

  • Registration Officer This is the most personal form of identification. It can be carried out directly on site at the company or at a branch office. The prerequisite for this is the training of an employee as a Registration Officer and ongoing recertification.

4. FAQ

Do I need a new identity if I already have ID Austria?

Usually no — you can sign directly in MOXIS with ID Austria.

How long does the video identification process take?

Usually only a few minutes, depending on the connection, lighting, and document verification.

What if I lose my password?

Without your old password, it is usually not possible to reset it. Check the steps for re-registration or ID Austria recovery.

Can I change the procedure later?

Yes. The selected procedure is only used for initial identification. For subsequent renewals or account changes, you can use other methods, provided that A-Trust offers them.
