ID Austria: What should you do when the certificate expires in 2026?

Contents

ID Austria certificates are valid for a maximum of 5 years. Many users switched from their old mobile signature to ID Austria in 2021. Their five-year validity period is now coming to an end. This affects over 300,000 certificates across Austria between May and August 2026.

1. How can I check if my certificate is about to expire?

The expiration date can be viewed in the following places:

  • In the ID Austria app
Please open the “Account” tab in the navigation bar. You will find the relevant information there.

  • On the A-Trust website
You can find instructions for this here.

  • On the ID Austria homepage
Under “Manage ID Austria” and the “Manage Login Credentials and Certificate” function, you can find the appropriate instructions here.

2. How can I renew my certificate?

Depending on the certificate type, various options are available to you:

2.1. ID Austria with full functionality (issued by a government agency)

An online renewal is free of charge and takes only a few minutes.

  1. Access the renewal service via this link.

  2. Log in as usual with your username and signature password.

  3. Start the renewal process. The certificate will be automatically renewed for 5 years.

2.2. ID Austria with basic functionality (issued by the authorities)

Upgrading to full functionality is also possible online. You can find all the relevant information here.

2.3. When is a personal visit to the registration office required?

In some cases, a personal visit to a registration office may be necessary. This applies to the following situations: A list of all registration offices (e.g., passport offices, municipalities) can be found here.

  • Users with a non-government-issued basic function

  • People without Austrian citizenship

  • People whose certificate has already expired

3. What happens if I miss the deadline?

Once the certificate has expired, online renewal is no longer possible. In this case, the ID Austria must be reapplied for in person at a registration authority (e.g., the passport office). Due to the high number of expiring certificates, increased demand and longer wait times are expected at government offices.

XiTip
Act early to avoid wait times!

4. What changes for users of the basic function?

The ID Austria with basic function, which is based on the scope of the old mobile signature, will no longer be renewed. Affected users must switch to the ID Austria with full functionality by the end of 2028 at the latest.

5. How will I be reminded of the expiration date in time?

To receive a reminder via email, you should provide an email address as contact information during your next registration or renewal.

6. Who should I contact if I have questions?

Depending on your concern, various resources are available to you.
