First steps: Signature qualities
Electronic signatures have become an integral part of modern business processes: they increase efficiency and flexibility and enable legally binding digital workflows. But not all signatures are the same – depending on legal requirements and security requirements, there are three main types, known as signature qualities. This article provides an initial overview.
1. Overview of the three signature qualities in MOXIS
MOXIS offers these signature qualities for both internal and external processes. The selection is made simply by using a slider when creating a new order. The selected quality determines how secure and legally binding the signature is.
1.1 Simple electronic signature (SES/EES)
Lowest security level according to eIDAS.
Application examples: Minutes, internal documentation, terms and conditions.
Special feature: No personal certificate required. However, a qualified company seal is stored in MOXIS to ensure authenticity and integrity.
1.2 Advanced electronic signature (AES/FES)
Higher security: Proof of identity, time stamp, integrity through encryption.
Examples of use: Purchase and rental agreements, contracts with increased value.
Security aspects: Authentication via SMS-TAN or password, optional biometric features.
1.3 Qualified electronic signature (QES)
Highest security level, legally equivalent to a handwritten signature.
Examples of use: Employment contracts, official documents, audit reports.
Prerequisite: Qualified certificate, personal identification (e.g. ID Austria).
Legal basis: eIDAS Regulation (EU) or ZertES (Switzerland).
2. How to choose the right signature quality for your order
The choice of the appropriate signature quality depends on the liability risk and the legal requirements of the document in question. While a simple signature is often sufficient for internal approvals, a qualified signature is recommended for contracts with a high value or legal formal requirements.
